What is SEO? Simply, it’s just telling web crawlers what’s on a particular page.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is an internet marketing strategy where the main practice is altering the online visibility and appearance of a website or specific web pages in a search engine’s results page. SEO activities are often made as an attempt to improve results for specific search queries.
Now if you don’t know what Googlebot is, it’s basically the thing that Google uses to display all of the results when you search something on Google. All search engines use crawlers to try and read all of the pages on the internet that they can find. Since Google is the most popular search engine, we’re going to talk about Googlebot in this guide. If you think you want to learn more about Googlebot, you can check out this page from Google by clicking here.
Below is a very basic and beginner understanding to merely one aspect of SEO, but I think it will provide a decent understanding of why all businesses and bloggers need SEO to have a functioning website that converts more customers and attracts more viewers to your website.
Beyond this point it would help to have a basic understanding of HTML. You don’t necessarily need one if you’re using a CMS like WordPress or Tumblr to publish your content, but I will always recommend learning this elementary markup language because almost every known website uses it.
SEO for Beginners.
Okay, so you have a website that has a bunch of pages on it. You want these pages to show up in Google when someone searches for something that’s related to them. Now since someone doesn’t manually go through every page on the internet and tell Google what’s what, Googlebot scans hundreds of millions of pages every day and uses AI to determine what is on each page.
This means that because Googlebot is telling Google what content is on every page, you’re going to want your pages easy for Googlebot to read. If you don’t do SEO, there is a strong chance that when your pages show up in a SERP (Search Engine Results Page) that they will not have the correct title or display the content that you had imagined they would.
How Do I Do SEO?
I won’t get super into how to get this done for every single different platform, but instead will publish blog posts on how to change these elements on individual platforms over time.
The next thing you need to do is make sure you have content on your page that Googlebot can read. If you have a web page that is published on your website but the page only has a title and description but no content, it’s basically telling Googlebot that you have any empty page.
This means that you have to write content for your web page if you want it to show up for a particular search query.
Writing Content for SEO.
What I think the most important thing to know about writing content for SEO is that you actually need to write content. The amount of companies that I’ve worked with that say “this web page looks to wordy” or “there’s too much text and no one is going to read it” is insane. You can and should put images on a web page, but if you don’t have any physical text on your website, then there will be almost nothing for the Googlebot to read.
